This structured Online Mridanga Course is designed for devotees and students who sincerely want to learn the Mridanga from the foundation, improve their hand techniques, develop rhythm and stamina, learn traditional Kirtan patterns, and gradually progress toward advanced Mridanga playing.
The course is suitable for beginners as well as students who already have some experience playing Mridanga and want to strengthen their technique and understanding of Kirtan rhythms.
What Is This Online Mridanga Course?
Mridanga, also known as Srikhol, is one of the principal percussion instruments used in Gaudiya Vaishnava Bhajan and Kirtan.
Learning Mridanga properly requires more than simply memorising beats. Students need to develop correct hand techniques, timing, rhythm, stamina, coordination and the ability to smoothly follow and support Kirtan.
This 8-month online Mridanga training program provides a structured learning path, beginning with hand practice and basic patterns and gradually progressing toward more advanced Kirtan rhythms and playing techniques.

What You Will Learn
Months 1–2: Foundation & Hand Practice
The first two months focus on developing a strong technical foundation.
Students will learn:
- 25 Hand Practice Mantras
- Different hand techniques
- Basic Mridanga movements
- Proper coordination between both hands
- Regular practice methods
- Techniques for developing control and consistency
The goal is to establish the correct foundation before moving into more complex patterns.
Months 3–4: Big Hatuti & Tehais
During months three and four, students progress into more structured Kirtan patterns.
Topics include:
- 19 Big Hatuti Mantras
- Long Tehais
- Pattern combinations
- Timing and rhythm control
- Playing patterns smoothly during Kirtan
- Building speed and confidence
Months 5–6: Kirtan Beats & Advanced Patterns
Students are introduced to a wider range of traditional Kirtan rhythms and playing styles.
The curriculum includes:
- Daspahira
- Lofa
- Dadra
- Kaharwa
- Matan
- Rela
- Dugi
- Different Kirtan beats
- Advanced rhythmic patterns
Students will learn how these patterns can be practised and applied during devotional singing and Kirtan.
Months 7–8: Advanced Mridanga Training
The final stage focuses on developing greater control, stamina and musical confidence.
Students will work on:
- Advanced Mridanga techniques
- Long-duration Kirtan practice
- Smooth transitions between rhythms
- Maintaining rhythm during extended Kirtan
- Improving speed and control
- Combining previously learned patterns
- Refining overall Mridanga playing technique
